It’s begun. The official Surfrider Foundation NYC chapter campaign to do SOMETHING about all these plastic bags. You probably don’t even see them — they are invisible. We collect them, stash them, stuff them, toss them, but ultimately we are spewing way too much plastic into the environment, particularly our water ways.
Now, you may not realize this but basically all of NYC is surrounded by water. Don’t panic. We have ferries. And life jackets. And lots of pizza boxes, which could probably be used as floatation devices in case of an emergency landing. The point is, a TON of what we toss winds up in the ocean. And we here at Surfrider Foundation NYC don’t want the ocean to become plastic soup (if you don’t think that’s happening, check out 5gyres.org).
